Head's Message
Welcome! At Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall School, students with a wide rage of interests, talents and academic backgrounds discover their potential, realize their excellence and achieve greater success. With small classes and a faculty to student ratio of 1 to 5, we are able to identify the specific strengths of each student, and build upon them.
We see every student as a unique individual. We have developed a “multiple intelligences” approach to teaching which is based on the fact that students learn in a variety of ways, and schools, therefore, should provide a range of engaging learning opportunities. For example, when you visit CH-CH, don’t be surprised to see ninth grade students gathered at one of our outdoor “classrooms,” wearing togas in a realistic debate as Roman Senators, Advanced Biology Students netting birds for banding and release, or 11th grade English students creating “Hyperlinked Poetry” in the Media Lab.
Students and teachers are organized by grade-level, which provides multiple layers of support for every student. For instance, a senior’s math teacher might also be his or her advisor, coach, dorm parent and senior presentation mentor. It is virtually impossible for any student to “fall through the cracks” at CH-CH because there simply aren’t any cracks to fall through!
Although not every student brings the same sets of knowledge, skills or abilities with him or her, there are areas that are fundamental to success in school, college and life. So, for example, we teach organizational, time-management and study skills at every grade level. Should a student hit a rough spot in a particular class (which happens to all students, at some point), he or she can easily get extra help, which is offered every day, in every subject. Students in every grade can receive ongoing academic support through our Learning Center, which also offers intensive instruction in writing and math.
All our programs reflect our philosophy that students should be seen as “gifted in different directions,” to quote the phrase used by the founder of Chauncy Hall, established in 1828. For example, in athletics, no students are “cut” from teams. Similarly, the performing arts program offers all students a variety of opportunities to develop their skills as actors, singers and musicians.
Our eagerness to embrace the many ways that students learn and the (often hidden) talents they possess is reflected in our celebration of humanity’s diversity. With approximately 20% students of color and 30% international students, our campus is truly a global village. Students from across the U.S. and from around the world add beautiful texture and color to the fabric of our community.
Given the many lands our students come from, communication is critically important to our success. Twice a week, students meet with their advisors to review weekly reports. These reports summarize the work a student is doing in every subject, with attention paid both to areas of achievement and areas that need attention. No matter where they are, parents can log in and view their son or daughter’s weekly progress reports through Podium, our online reporting system.
Podium is just one example of the many recent improvements we have made at CH-CH. We have just renovated our science labs, the school library, boys’ and girls’ dormitories and many classrooms and are in the process of becoming a wireless school in our major buildings. In addition, we continue to craft and landscape our beautiful 37 acres in order to develop our entire campus as a “classroom.” We think of our campus as “an educational eco-system.”
CH-CH is a school with a vision and a school on the move. By necessity, this is just a brief overview of some of our strengths—our “multiple intelligences” approach to teaching and learning, our Learning Center, our celebration of diversity, and our commitment to continuous improvement. To get a better understanding of the school, I encourage you to explore this website still further—the academic program, the campus tour and news are good places to start.
Better yet, visit us in person, and be welcomed by the many friendly individuals who make CH-CH such a rich—and enriching—school.
Sincerely yours,
Siri Akal Khalsa, Ed.D. Head of School
